PORTUGAL’S BEST-KEPT SECRET
The Eastern Algarve, or Sotavento, stretches from Faro to the Spanish border, offering an extraordinary blend of natural beauty, authentic culture and unspoiled beaches. Often called Portugal’s best-kept secret, this region has remained largely untouched by the mass tourism that has transformed other parts of the Algarve. Here, life is slower, the landscape is greener and the rhythm is set by sun, sea and the gentle flow of the Ria Formosa lagoon.
At the heart of the region lies the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve, a 60 kilometre lagoon system that separates the mainland from long, golden sand islands. This protected paradise is home to rare migratory birds, thriving shellfish farms and some of the Algarve’s most beautiful Blue Flag beaches. The climate of Sotavento is slightly warmer and calmer than the central and western Algarve, ideal for year-round exploration, outdoor activities and leisurely living.
With Faro International Airport nearby, visitors can quickly reach the region, where a variety of activities await: golf on 6 x 18 hole courses, hiking and cycling through the countryside, birdwatching in the lagoons, horse riding, kite surfing, paddleboarding and kayaking. The region also boasts a lively cultural scene with clubs, festivals and community events catering to all interests.
